1. Never Stop Learning

Learning goes beyond formal education and studies. At the very least, it entails remaining very curious and having a desire to know more. This desire is very essential to stand out in the job market today. Through an online course, a youtube channel, a website or blog, a lot can be learnt - the internet is a decentralised hub of information and its yours for the taking. So take it. Continuously reading and learning new things will help you prepare for opportunities you never saw coming.

Looking to take a course or learn something new? Try Coursera, FreeCodeCamp or Grow with Google.

2. Grow Your Network

Networking can sometimes feel superficial, awkward or forced. Never let that stop you. Embrace other professionals who are doing what you do or what you would love to do. While its good to seek mentors who can guide you on career paths, connecting with peers and younger colleagues can also boost your social skills and provide more common ground for discussions. At any rate, always be open to having professional conversations, learning about what amazing work others are doing and building a network of people you can reach out to and vice versa. Its all connected.

LinkedIn is the go-to place to connect with professionals but other platforms like Medium and Twitter (X) can offer the opportunity to peer into and share insightful thoughts with professionals under less formal settings. For physical networking, Eventbrite is a must-have! Sign up to events in your city and show up. Everything else will take care of itself.

3. Find Your Center

American writer Charles Bukowski once said, "Find something you love and let it kill you". While this is not to be taken in a literal sense, the spirit behind those words reveal that doing something you love makes doing it easier. Finding your center is akin to finding your Ikigai - where work, passion and purpose intersect. So think hard, examine yourself, find something you love doing or are good at, and aim to get better at it everyday. It won't feel like work, you'll be able to sell yourself better and can better open windows of opportunity for yourself.
